The Misses Scott Album – transcription of names

This album was presented in July 1916 to sisters Amelia and Louisa Scott, members of the Tunbridge Wells Committee, by the Belgians living in the town, as a token of their gratitude.

Similar albums were presented to other members of the Committee, but only this one is known to still exist.  It can be seen in the Women’s Library @ LSE.

If you know of the existence of any others, we would love to hear from you.

“The members of the Club Albert & the Belgian Refugees in Tunbridge Wells deeply moved by the kindness & generosity so lavishly bestowed on them in this county during their exile – & particularly by your goodselves – were eager to express their gratitude towards you.

This album is the outcome of these feelings. The gift is humble & in happier days might perhaps be considered unworthy of citizens of what was once rich & prosperous Belgium.

One & all, to the best of their ability, did what they could to make this album a souvenir which you might consider as worth keeping, not only in remembrance of them, but also & above all as a formal & durable testimonial of their heartfelt appreciation & gratefulness for the generous treatment which my outcast & homeless countrymen received at your hands in Tunbridge Wells.”

Albert Le Jeune, 21 July 1916, Stanton House, Pembury (Kent)
