The small committee to manage arrangements at Clayton’s Farmhouse was set up by Mr and Mrs JOHNSTONE of Burrswood, Groombridge in early September 1914.

Later in September 1914, the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Charles Whitbourn Emson, set up the Borough Committee which worked until all the refugees had returned home in May 1919.

From 1917 Councillor Emson was no longer Mayor, but he continued as Chairman of the Committee.
